Mira Mesa’s evolution from a brush covered mesa to San Diego’s largest community began in 1969. In response to a housing shortage in San Diego, development began north of MCAS Miramar (then NAS Miramar, home of the TOPGUN training program and known as “Fightertown USA”). Mira Mesa would at that time be the northernmost “real” community in the city of San Diego. Mira Mesa, which means “view of the mesa,” was the name given to the community by the developers building the first homes.
In the over four decades since its founding, Mira Mesa has grown from a sparsely populated “bedroom community” to a community that is home to over 73,000 people. Mira Mesa is home to one of the largest employment centers for San Diego, the Sorrento Mesa business and technology area. Mira Mesa’s Miramar area features businesses providing goods and services for the numerous military families in Mira Mesa and on base at MCAS Miramar.
